The Wessex Wobbler Rally (Region 14)

Just as an update, and to prove I’m not ignoring this thread 😉, the newly formed Region 14 rally committee will be considering the very important matter of the rally name at its first meeting which will hopefully happen next week.

Region 14 2023 Rally Update

A quick update on next years rally plans as I know some of our members have been asking for an update.

Next years R14 rally will be held May 12th to May 14th

We have looked at a number of different venues in different parts of the region which were suggested by members and we are pleased to be able to tell you that we have been able to secure a new rally venue at Chippenham rugby club.

The new venue at Chippenham RFC has excellent bar and catering facilities, a good sized outside patio area, 24 hour access to toilet and shower facilities that are located close to the camping area and the clubs facilities team are very keen to work with us to give you what we hope will be one of the best rally’s of 2023.

The area that will be used for camping will be the grass areas located adjacent to the first team pitch, in front of the clubhouse and is very close to the clubhouse and toilet/ showering facilities, so will be far more convenient than was the case at this years rally venue in Westbury. We also have access to another grassed area, should we have the need for an overflow camping area.

The clubhouse bar has an extensive selection of real ales, ciders, lagers and wines and spirits, so there should be a tipple for all tastes.

The clubhouse has full catering facilities and will be providing both breakfast and evening meal options at affordable rugby club prices.

The rugby club is easily accessed from the A350 and M4 making a great location for guests who are travelling from further afield.

For those that don’t want to camp, there is a Premier Inn located just up the road (2 minute taxi ride or 15 minute walk)

For those who want to venture away from the rally venue for food and drink, there is a good pub with extensive food and carvery options located a 15 minute walk away from the clubhouse. The town centre is a 10 minute taxi ride away from the rugby club where another hotel, several pubs and a good selection of food establishments can be found including a Weatherspoon’s. There is also a late night kebab van located a 5 minute walk away from the clubhouse. There is also a very good farm shop cafe about a 10 minute walk away that has a good reputation for hot food, coffee cakes etc.

We have formed a rally committee made up of both the regions elected officers and members who have expressed a wish to help out with the organising of the rally. This committee will be responsible for planning and delivering the rally, including making decisions on things like catering arrangements, entertainment/bands, ride out route and destination, rally merchandise, volunteer rota’s, health and safet arrangements etc.

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that this post makes no reference to a name for the rally. One of the first jobs for the rally committee is to determine the name of the rally, so feel free to suggest rally names (in addition to those already suggested) for the rally committee to consider.

Mike pointed out the relationship between Chippenham and Alfred the Great. In early 878AD Alfreds court sitting at Chippenham was subject to a surprise attack by Guthrums Danich Army In breach of a treaty. This caused Alfreds retreat into the Somerset levels and hence the legend of the burnt cakes. Alfred rebuilt his army and defeated Guthrum at Ethandune later in 878. My suggestion is the Wessex Wobble Rally because although the Kingdom wobbled at Chippenham it went on to win the war with Alfreds children and grandchildren eventually throwing the danes out and laying the foundations of England

Sticking with Frogs - how about the following in light of the historical info now provided.

Saxon Frog Rally
Wessex Croak Rally
Hop to Wessex Rally
WTF Rally (Wessex Tents & Frogs Rally)

Mark.
Looks to me like all the boxes have been ticked. Should be a cracking rally. Just one question? Is the main room in the club house big enough for a band and 100+ of our members?
Tony.

Hi Tony,

Yes, should be large enough and we also have a lounge bar and the area where the skittles alley is located to use as well.

If the weather gods are kind to is, we will also have the use of the hard standing area and picnic tables to the front of the clubhouse and the new BBQ area and patio that is being built to the rear of the lounge bar.

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions.
The rally committee has considered them all and decided on 'The Wessex Wobbler Rally' for it's historic connections :)

For those that are interested in the historic connection, see Rustic Monsters post earlier in this thread. The rally committee decided that with a plentiful supply of local ale and cider on tap, the rally is likely to be a proper wobbler of a rally held in the depths of the ancient kingdom of Wessex.
