When I rebuilt my FXS I didn't replace the kicker. The previous owner about 30 years ago swapped out the case cover for an FL one. But inside, he'd left the mainshaft gearing and spring. So yesterday I replaced the cover, shoved my kicker gear in, and cranked it.
No go. The oil slinger (?)wings on the plate behind the gear teeth were just too big, and hit the mainshaft gear with each part revolution, because the relative placements of the respective gear surfaces were just not correct; one was 'deeper' in the kicker compartment than the other. But there's no way to alter their 'kind of' fixed positions (even if one is spring loaded).

So I ground down the wings, reducing their protrusion and ground notches in the plate, just deep enough to clear the teeth. Now it kicks.

Don't forget to run that locking nut down against the swing arm. Don't want to lose those nice new adjusters! ;-)
Snail cam adjusters, not my favourite either.

Removed the S&S super E. Frome my 1979. 1200. shovel. Replaced it with a CV. Fitted a brass fuel inlet. N65 needle. 48 pilot. 185 main. Mixture 2 1/2. Turns out.
stock oval air filter. Fxr throttle cable..have fitted CVs to all my previous shovels.

Finished my 81 Bonnie apart from the tank badges due to the company in India making the petrol tanks to take the eye brow badges instead of the standard badge. I ordered a Aluminium tank so no rust but disappointed with the badge mounting distance being to short so I think a 6" badge and drill a new hole in the badge
