Anti Virus Recommendations

Just got a new to me laptop - no anti virus on it. I used AVG on my old one (the free version) - anyone suggest something good and current. Also any other protective program? Prefer free ones but will pay for proper protection. Thanks.

I'm no expert at all but I have a son-in-law who works right at the cutting edge of computer systems design. His recommendation for me was to use Windows Defender which came as part of the Windows installation on my new pc. If your new device is Apple then just ignore me.
Somebody once told me "ask 10 different experts and get 10 different opinions".

Check out Rogers first post in Computer Q & A Tips. What he recommends is good stuff. I would never use Norton, not only does it slow your Computer down it is a bugger to get rid of!
As rockinrooster said, Windows Defender is pretty good.

Hi all been using kaspersky for year(used to get it free with Barclays). Have read that using Defender with the free version of Malwarebytes is a good free option.
