is there anyway of testing the Cam Position Sensor ?
the green sealant on the connections (sensor end of lead) is soft like chewing gum
the pot itself is compressibility soft to touch
does this mean it has cooked itself ?

am i right in it will not show a fault code on ecm spy ?
i have a massive misfire between 3-4k
above 4k it pulls like a rhino with it's balls on fire

have checked ..
H/T leads
plugs(changed two sets)
coil resistance
renewed 02 sensor which was the fault code that ecm showed
connectors and low tension leads :mad:

Re: Cam Position Sensor

update

using ecm spy , my mate Kev (Big Thanks mate) did some diagnostics
this showed the AFV at 145% !! he corrected this , we think the old O2 sensor being faulty would have caused this, also the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) showed the throttle being closed at 1/4 open , which he also reset, so i hope that's the cure

bloody electronics great when it's working correctly:D BUT when it aint....

Re: Cam Position Sensor

Been looking at buell on ebay, as harleys seem to be still over priced at the mo. Apart from your elecy gremlins how do you rate them.

Re: Cam Position Sensor

Hi Mike , the earlier tubular framed ones are best , i have a 2001 X1 Lightning
makes me grin like a loon..

the XB (fuel in the frame) are fun but CAN be a money pit.. IF the gearbox fails
(unlike the Tubular framed models) the XB series has no trapdoor in the gearbox
I.E. you will have to remove the heads & barrels to split the crankcases to access the gear box
which at dealer prices is an expensive bill , however independents ,...or if you are handy with spanners yourself

try ,ukbeg.com you don't have to register to read the forums
but the social section is hidden unless you do

Re: Cam Position Sensor

Hi

After being a lurker here and Sportster 1200 owner for years, I just bought a Buell Lightning 1200 and I was having problems that I traced to the CPS.

I found a few threads on the matter, like this one:

UK Buell Enthusiasts Group • View topic - The Saga continues

The clever guys on UKBEG used this ECMSpy tool to acquire some run data and see that when the bike cut out, the engine speed was zero but nothing else wrong. The fuel computer thought the engine wasn't running. The owner swapped CPS and fuel computer but in the end it was a harness fault.

I found a local guy with the ECMSpy who is on the ukbeg and he helped me log data, it was the same as the above, but it went away when I swapped the CPS over to one off his Buell.

He told me that they fail intermittently or dead. For dead ones, you can crank the engine and log some data, if there is no engine speed, but all the other logged data, the CPS is dead.

Really worth a visit to UK Buell Enthusiasts Group • Index page
