USB Cables should have been double ended from the start. There is no technical reason to have them the way they are.
It's a hang over from the systems USB replaced as far as I can see.
Old Serial and Parallel ports were 'odd ended' with different plugs on each end.
Another reason for the change is that USB is up to version 3. It is capable of transferring data a lot faster than the original standard as is USB version 2.
Original USB cables can't pass the data at the rate version 3 is capable of.
