Re: harley davidson sx 175

In a nutshell, whatever someone's prepared to pay for it.

If you require info about it, try here;

2-Stroke Spaghetti Harley Riders

Dutch club but AFAIK the only club who actually specialise in these bikes. There are a few on here who have 'em but this might well be your best bet.

Re: harley davidson sx 175

That's right BaZa; I remember a guy buying one in 1976 and because it was the 200th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence Harley had a specially decorated Sportster (wonder if any still exist?) and a very nice poster, which I've still got.
So this guy, who really wanted a Sportster, bought a poster, cut out all the eagles and things, and sellotaped them to the tank and panels. Instant 'Anniversary' SX!
Made in Italy by the old Aermacchi company, BTW.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: harley davidson sx 175

Is any one else stunned by the fact that we have brand new virgin posters logging on and asking us to value their bikes. WTF?

No hello, no club meets, no intro...
just, how much is it worth?

Sigh.

Not any more Jon,but I used to get a bit angry. It's not just this forum,it's all over.
The new internet generation, want it now, want it for free.:frown:

Re: harley davidson sx 175

Well I have to say that if I came across something unusual and didn't know if it was worth anything or whether I should throw it away, I would do exactly what this guy has done, ie find a forum and ask.
Then, depending on how I was treated, I just might gain some enthusiasm for something that had been just a curiosity. Then, I might consider joining a club that had been helpful and friendly...
Cheers,
Pete

Re: harley davidson sx 175

if it has a log book its worth quite a bit of money

people will happily pay good money for the bike and the log book, use the log book to legitimise a "project bike" and flog the bike off for parts afterwards

Re: harley davidson sx 175

What Pete said, though I can also understand where Jon is coming from.

I think the reason that valuation requests, however innocent, jar a bit with some of us is that by and large we as HDRCGB members and by definition enthusiasts don't really bother much about the actual cash value of our bikes; they're worth far more to us than that.

After all, "what's it worth?" is by far the most common question fired at you by the non-biking public these days.

Did that, and very financially beneficial it was too. :D

Exactly. This guy probably has no idea about any bikes, but when people see the name Harley, they know it is going to have some value regardless of the fact they have a "Non-Biking" background. So what he did, is exactly what anyone of us would do placed in that position. You'd google Harley, come across a forum like ours and plonk your question in the forum quite innocently believing you're doing nothing wrong. It's obvious and clear that would be a normal and common route. Long term site members that do not join the club and that put little or no valuable input into the forum are a completely different situation and one that does bother me. There are many (i.e. G.R.Brown) that are not members, but input enormous amounts of info and help into the site, in my view, they "earn their keep" so to speak, but the others! Grrrrrrrr. :D.

Re: harley davidson sx 175

Well, if anyone feels strongly about it, they don't need to reply...

I looked at a 125 a while back, and it wasn't expensive - less than a grand - but I heard that parts were hard to get, so gave it a bye.

Re: harley davidson sx 175

The SX-175 came out in 1974, had one as my second bike (joined the club with a Z-90!) and they (1974) all had gearbox bush problems, cost H-D a lot in warrantees. The main problem keeping a SX/SS/SST 175/250 etc on the road is usually the ignition module, when Harston Motorcycles were the remaining sorce of help they were experimenting with non-factory alternatives. Over five years ago I sold a trio of dismantled 250's and mix n' match parts for only a few hundred quid, a house move killed off the plan to make one good expendable hack from the bunch. In a parallel universe they could be worth a bit but this side of the worm-hole cold reality is painful/
Good luck.
