An ad featuring the WLD Special

Special? Eh?
1939-WLD.jpg

I don't know what this year this ad appeared.
Judging by the tank decals I might have guessed 36-39 but I didn't know that the aluminium heads were that early. Anyone know just when it was that the #6 heads came out?
Also the clutch release arm thing looks off? I'm used to seeing only the army issue one that's triangular (sorta) at the bottom.
And the 'deep-finned' cylinders'; was this a special part to this model only.?
And the 'large manifold like the WLDR'.......... a special thing (p/n wise) perhaps?. Same ? on the plug wrench.
Or were these things made standard issue on all later 45's?
Noting the I-beam front end I'm gonna guess 'yes'.
Not having a 45 parts book for myself............................:upset:
I note the 'plenty of smoke' line............. for confounding the closing competition aft no doubt.

At first glance I thought it said The WILD Special.rolleye

Off the top of my head I'm gonna say '39. Looks very similar to a mate's I worked on recently. I'll check to be sure....unless somebody with more knowledge corrects me.

You're right Boris, according to "Inside Harley-Davidson" the civilian WLD Special debuted in mid 1939. Page 183 under the picture if you have the book.
