Re: Late 1970's Photos

Is that a young Charlie Brown in the natty red and white hat ?

Re: Late 1970's Photos

Ah lots of memories and quite a few old faces, some who's names I can't pull back. No dome tents, no baseball caps, Red Baron scarves, no speed cameras.....I remember when we were all fields....

(quick edit - natty hat, just found out it is Geoff "Captain Confusion" Bowering!)

Great pics, beautiful bikes, NO leather cuts... but darn you lot were ugly

Re: Late 1970's Photos

My brother (ex-Bonnie man) has been digging out some seventies pix he took at club events, should get some more in due course but here are a couple from the first (went back in '84) Brighton Super Rally in 1979. There were definately more Electras around in clubs back then and the continentals tended to have the most lavish. The chrome and green one is from now disbanded Riders Club Berlin, the Frank Frazatta one I think was dutch. More to follow.

Re: Late 1970's Photos

And the little Aermacchi parked among the "big" bikes too - nice one!

Re: Late 1970's Photos

In the days before all harley riders had grey hair and goatees

Re: Late 1970's Photos

Right, found the '79 Brighton Super Rally pix - I did warn you about how many Glides there were back then! (spot the 1928 J model in background)

Re: Late 1970's Photos

Even shots of any other bike has FLH's in background! This lovely U series machine might be french and the Forty-five should appeal to Kev and Vince. (one photo I haven't included actually has a dome tent in background, now one can't spot a ridge tent anymore!)scan0001.jpgscan0009.jpg

Re: Late 1970's Photos

This was the Liberator fairing offered through the Harley accessories catalog but I recall it was made by Vetter (?) and marketed by Harley. Quite rare now, you can see on the console there are press outs for dials and switches. Note the large storage pockets.scan0008.jpgscan0007.jpg

Re: Late 1970's Photos

This 75th anniversary 78XLH belongs to the woman with the white strap (husband with full face on arm had a Super Glide and chair, might be he couldn't ride a solo?) who was American. The bike has lots of gold plated parts, she was saying to everyone "some women wear jewelry, I like to ride it". The blue FLH custom I think belonged to a GB member, anyone remember it..?

Re: Late 1970's Photos

More dutch Glides, first a couple (as in a man and a woman, married to each other - thats what that meant back then!) with his and hers Glides, you can guess who's is which though I'd be happy with either. Another loving dutch couple, again Glides in background, ridge tents everywhere.

Re: Late 1970's Photos

A very modern sidecar, I want to say Hedingham?? and a cheeky two-stroke peeking over the tent (and ANOTHER Glide..). A month before the event Brighton race course pulled down and turfed over a small building, for two weeks before it rained constantly (we were passing bricks big time!!) so by the event, which was dry, we had this huge patch of bog. Everyone avoided it but an FLH combo tried riding through it and got stuck, then chairman John Andrew went to pull him out with his Wagoneer which sunk in! The site had a tractor but it had bald tyres so finally both vehicles were saved by many blokes with mud up to their knees. I apologise for my bell bottom bleached jeans and the jap bike - don't know how that got in.scan0003.jpgscan0011.jpg

Re: Late 1970's Photos

Thanks, there are not many photos from those days as far less people had cameras with them (until the good old Olympus Trip!) and also quite a few of those with pix are no longer in touch with the club. Should be getting some old shots from past Tool Hire Officer Stuart Graham ("Rowdy") now he has a scanner, he or I will post.
Yes, searching these out does bring back good (and bad) memories - I may share some stories as well if it doesn't come across as maudlin...

Re: Late 1970's Photos

This photo isn't very interesting but the story around it might be. In the 70's/80's we had lots of involvement with Harley riding yanks from the US airbases over here. One lot were called the Knights of Steel MC, they had patches but were more mc than MC if you get my meaning. This was a weekend party in Badingham, Suffolk at a house one of them was renting (not for much longer after the party!), you can see one of them fixing a big speaker in the tree. They "cleaned" out an oil drum by rolling it around with burning petrol soaked rags then set it in a big bonfire and filled it with giant catering cans of chilli, stirring it with a scaffold tube (and some mud from the boot of the bloke stirring). Thats my Sportie with the luggage still on, the saturday I had to work back in London, when I returned the site was empty apart from a small bunch of Mick Gillah's crowd, the night I wasn't there about 50 of the Chosen Few MC turned up and trashed the place. Back in London a BMW rider I knew had warned me there was a rumour of some trouble coming to a bike rally, I thought this was it but it turned out to be the weekend of the New Forest attack on the Windsor! scan0023.jpg
