Mikuni and K&N Filter - still bangs!

Well having spent the weekend with the spanners out fitting a Mikuni HSR42 and new K&N filter I have.......................

ONLY JOKING -   I got the credit card out and let some oil lover do it.

Anyway, those of you who have been behind my bike will know that it bangs like a bast@rd and shoots blue flames out of my V&H Big Shots on overrun.
The hope was that fitting the Mikuni would get rid of this (althougn I sort of like the attention :) ), but it didn't. The bike goes like hell now though and the vibration that had started at about 90mph has gone, now it pulls like a porn star at a singles convention.;)

So a couple of questions for those of you with a penchant for dirty fingernails;

Should I get some Kurykyn Power Cones fitted to stop the banging / flames?

Should I sell the original carb? How much?

I had a Street Glide for the day when the bike was in the dealers and the stereo is the bollox. Can you imagine how good I looked cruising through Yorkshire villages in the sunshine with Bonnie Tyler belting out "Holding Out for a Hero" at full volume and me singing along?

Exactly. That's why I will not be getting one.

1 It may alleiviate the symptom but not cure the cause, so might a more restrictive baffle.
sounds like its over jetted at the primary level 25 too big?
2 about sixpence:rolleyes: thats why you had it taken off;)

Re: Mikuni and K&N Filter - still bangs!

Thanks Simon.

Is fixing that easy? Re-jetting?

Could I do it? (Stupid question)

BACKFIRING IN EXHAUST:
Possible causes:

1. Backfiring when the throttle is
closed (especially noticeable from
high rpm) is not necessarily caused
by lean mixtures. However, lean
mixtures can contribute to its intensity.
2. High performance mufflers with
large exit area or low-restriction
baffles contribute to exhaust backfiring.
3. An exhaust system air leak can
cause or intensify exhaust popping.
Air entering at the junction
of the header pipes and mufflers
can cause excessive popping upon
deceleration.
4. Out-of-time ignition together with
misfiring may lead to loud backfiring.
Such backfiring usually occurs
irregularly and at large throttle
openings.

Who hit you over the head with a rubber mallet or are you on the turn? You're migrating out of the Beer tent and up to Virtual rally, before you know it you'll be posting in the tech area and buying some spanners  :p :D

Re: Mikuni and K&N Filter - still bangs!

I posted this in Chatter and some f*cker moved it! ;)

I do own spanners! In fact I have a huge collection of all sorts of tools because I like to take on jobs at home, fitting radiators, sinks etc. tiling, laying patios that sort of thing. I just don't do engines or oily things attached to engines.

Re: Mikuni and K&N Filter - still bangs!

Just the job for a Harley then: all you need to add is a 'dockyard screwdriver' (4lb mash hammer), chisels and a hacksaw...
