Why Did Tyneham’s Inhabitants Leave?
The story behind the evacuation of Tyneham Village is a poignant chapter in British history. In 1943, during the height of World War II, the British military requisitioned the village and the surrounding area for training purposes.
Due to its proximity to the Lulworth firing ranges, the government decided to claim Tyneham village and much of its surrounding land as a place to train the Allied forces. https://tynehamvillage.org/....

Meet at Ower McDonalds for 08:45 to leave at 09:00hrs. map
The ride will be leisurely through Fordingbridge and onto Shaftsbury to meet our R14 Neighbours for Breakfast, then onto The Lost Village of Tyneham.
Please post up if you intend to come so we know who to wait for.

Tyneham used to be open on the odd weekend, just keep to the marked paths --
It was immaculate then, as was the beach, plenty of wild life including Nightingales, the only litter was the odd tank hull.
Last time we went it had been given back to the public, what a bloody mess.
I think the Army should have kept it!!

John is taking the ride attendees from Ower up to the R14 meet for Brekki as per the details in the event.

The brekki meet (in case you get lost, or are travelling up separately) is 10am at Skevy’s Cafe, Unit 24B, Wincombe Business Park, Shaftesbury, SP7 9QJ

Excellent days riding, starting at Ower services 8 of us set of across the forest though Fordingbridge and on to Shaftesbury. Meet up with about 15 of the Region 14 guys for breakfast at Skevys Cafe just north of Shaftsbury. Then on to Tyneham through some stunning Dorset countryside across the Lulworth firing range. There's not much of the village left, most of the buildings are derelict except the immaculate church, interesting to read the various storyboards though. After a good look around in the sunshine it was time to head back and drop into Rivo's Hub cafe near Pool for coffee and cake. From there I parted company and headed for home, clocked up about 120 miles. Thanks John for leading the whole day and everyone for junction marking etc. A great day out :encouragement: :encouragement:
