Region 14 trip to Region 5 Yorkshire White Rose Rally 17th to 20th August -Arrangements for Thursday ride to Peak District and Sunday hotel added

Mark Hammond

Committee
Region 5 (Yorkshire) White Rose Rally 18th to 20th August

Advance notice for those of you who need to plan your time off and weekends away.

Region 14 will once again be heading north this summer for a long weekend of camping, partying, rally fun and visiting the home rally of club president Glenn Goodberry and club chairman Veggie Dave.

As with last years northern trip, this will be a long weekend leaving Region 14 on Thursday 17th August and getting back into Region 14 Monday 21st August.

Thursday night will be spent camping next to a pub in the Peak District, where we will be meeting up with friends from Region 6 for a pre rally warm up drink. We will then all ride to Yorkshire together on the Friday.

We will travel part way home on the Sunday riding some of the best roads in the Peak District and heading for the popular biking destination of Matlock in Derbyshire, where we are proposing to stay in B&B’s or hotels. Aiming to be in Matlock early afternoon to kick back and have a chilled afternoon looking at the Sunday afternoon biking activity and enjoying a few scoops 🍺

For those that are thinking about joining us on our northern party weekend, this is the hotel that we will be using in Matlock Bath on the Sunday night

Monday will be spent travelling back to Region 14 and possibly stopping off at a place of interest (yet to be decided)

Meet up points, timings and plan for Thursday and Friday

Thursday 17th August – Peak District
The main meet up point will the BP petrol station at Lower Stanton St Quintin (SN14 6BN) that is located just off of M4 junction 17 and about half a mile up the road heading towards Malmesbury on the A429 (google maps image attached) We will leave here at 11:00am.

We will have a second meet point at the BP petrol station in Stow-on-the-Wold (GL54 1JU) aiming to leave here at 12:00pm.

It's then three hours riding time to the Peak District using a route that avoids motorways and will predominantly be two lane A roads (Fosse Way and A515) apart from a shortish spell on the A5. We’ll plan to have a couple of pee/coffee/fuel stops and generally aim to have a relaxed ride with no need to rush the pace. Our approach route to the Peak District is on the A515 which will take us into the bottom of the Peak District and takes us through some nice roads with good scenic views before arriving at our camp site (I used the A515 to get into the Peak District last year and it was relatively quiet for traffic and avoids the traffic that would be encountered if approaching from the Rippon/Matlock direction) Planning to arrive at the campsite sometime around 4:00pm to 4:30pm. We will meet up with Nev, Lisa and other friends from the club at the campsite.

The campsite we will be using on the Thursday night is a small Farm campsite that is located directly opposite the famous Yonderman café. The campsite is also located next door to the Three Stags Head pub. This campsite has been found by Nev and Lisa, it’s a basic campsite and the cost is £5 per head payable in cash (the owners do not have card payment facilities) Being a basic camp site, there are no showering facilities.

For those not travelling to the Peak District with the main group, the campsite entrance is the gateway directly opposite the Yondermann cafe, ride through the gateway & follow the drive round to the right & go straight ahead on to the camping field. Use the address for the Yonderman café to navigate to the campsite. We will be using the Yonderman for breakfast on the Friday and the Yonderman opens at 7:30am

Thursday evening: Once the tents are up and everyone has arrived at the campsite we will be making our way to the Anchor pub at Tideswell. We will use for the evening meal as the Three Stags Head do not serve food (bar snacks available) The Anchor is approximately 1.5 miles away from the campsite on the same side of the road (A623) as the three stags heads, we are planning to ride to the Anchor and stay long enough for everyone to eat, before returning to the campsite and Three Stags Head. Card or cash at the Anchor.

The Three Stags Heads
The pub we will be using Thursday evening is next door to the campsite. predominately a real ale pub that looks like nothing you will have seen before, rocking chairs & banjos a plenty.

They prefer cash payments at the bar due to poor internet in this rural area, so again, lets make sure we have enough cash to see us through the evening. Closing time at the Three Stags Head is usually 10:30pm, but they have been known to stay open later if there’s a good party going on. If the pub does close at 10:30pm, we’ll buy some carry out to drink by the tents.

This is what CAMRA have to say about the Three Stags Head “A marvellous, rural country pub, sited to serve a road junction and which used to double as a farm. The oldest buildings date from the seventeenth- or eighteenth-century and the higher, right-hand part was added in the nineteenth century. This remote country pub used to be part of a farm but is now linked to a pottery business. The entrance leads to the basic main bar with a stone-flagged floor and huge stone fire surround. The counter was installed in the 1940s (the front is 1980s) along with the brown painted shelves which serve as a back-fitting. To the right is the 'Music Room', only recently brought into pub use but kitted out in a style which fully matches the rustic spirit of the main bar. The door on the left of the lobby, with a figure 3 on it, is to the original second public room and is pressed into service when the pub is busy. The Abbeydale beers include the ferocious Lurcher (8%), brewed only for the pub and celebrating its dog-friendliness”

Friday 18th August – Peak District and White Rose Rally
After breakfast at the Yonderman café, we will start the ride to the rally site in Malton. We are planning that the ride to the rally site will be led by club members who know the Peak District and Yorkshire well, with a view to the route going through the Peak District and using some of the best riding roads in the area before leaving the Peak District and making our way to the Rally site. We are planning to stop at the famous Squires café bar which is located on our route to the rally site.

The ride to the rally site is a relatively short distance of approximately 110 miles and about 2 hours 30 minutes riding time. We are planning to arrive at the rally site early Friday afternoon.

Thanks to Nev and Lisa for researching and sorting out the arrangements for camping, dining, and partying in the Peak District.

It’ll be an informal and laid back weekend, open to any members of Region 14 or friends of Region 14 that want to join us.

The Yorkshire party people are currently:

Sunday morning we will be stopping at the Yorkshire Air Museum which is a short 30 minute ride from the rally site, before makimg our way down into the Peak District and Matlock - this stop should provide some time for the last remnants of any hangovers to subside 😉

I visited the Yorkshire Air Museum last year, it's a great day out. Factor in plenty of time to see as much as you can.
There's volunteers on hand who will tell you about the exhibits. One of these is an ex RAF pilot who actually flew one of the Buccaneers on display.
Enjoy!

Billy, Jen, Paul, Margaret, Stephen, Wendy, and Roy, see you at Lower Stanton BP station for an 11am departure. I’ve spoken to those who aren’t on Facebook and they will meet us at Lower Stanton or Stow on the Wold. Marjorie and Scud will see us at the camp site.

Don’t forget, its cash only at the Three Stags Head tonight and cash payment for camp site (£5 per head)

We are being joined at the Peak District by a few folks from different regions and we expect to be about 20/22 this evening. With that in mind, Nev and Lisa have arranged for us to have a reserved dining room at The Anchor for tea tonight. Aiming to be at the Anchor for tea at around 5pm (ish). Once everyone has eaten, we will make our way back to the Three Stags Head, where they will be opening up one of their snug bars for us to use.

See you later this morning 👍🍺⛺🎸🥃🕺

Room booked in the Anchor at 4-pm onwards (Thursday) for evening meal, we can have
the room till 7-30 so no need to rush. The room seats 25 people so we should be OK.
Look forward to seeing you all later in the Peak District.
