Transmission Trap door

Crumpy

Health & Safety Clerk:
In short friend had accident on his fxr 2/1 muffler knocked off and bracket pulled 2 screws out of trapdoor stripping the threads (see pic) they need to be helicoiled.
.

Question is can the trapdoor be removed leaving the gearbox cluster in place without the need to pull off all the primary so the 2 holes can be helicoiled ? .... or is there enough meat on the inner casting to confidentally helicoil through the trapdoor with it still in place ??

NO, is the short answer!

Why, the main shaft attaches to the the clutch, see diagram, in your second picture with the two nuts in the end cover the left one is the main shaft. In the realms of nothing is impossible, you could remove the two nuts on the shafts and prize the cover off, but I would be most surprised if done, that the gear box would work properly after without re-aligning it all, which most likely would require removing the gears!
You do not have to remove the inner primary and thus starter motor to remove the gear cluster and shafts, just remove the clutch and leave the main drive gear and drive pully in place, however this could be false economy as you most likely want to replace all the drive seals whilst apart to ensure you do not have any leaks after and be going back in again!

As for if the helicoil can be done successfully, you will most likely not find that out until you get the cover off and assess the damage. The hole needs to be enlarged with a drill to tap a larger diameter thread for the Helicoil to fit in, You would therefore need the clearance for that larger drill and tap in the outer cover if left in place!
