Wtf non start

Scrub the side stand switch. With rhe ignition on when you put it in gear the word sidestand appears and disappears when you put it back into neutral.

Must be the relay

How do I test that

I know that 4H is switch from the switch (if you see what I mean,) and 4G goes off to the starter

3H goes off to the fuses so that must be permanent live in

3G goes to turn signal brain

OK both switches checked and both have continuity when they should and none when they shouldn't. Also a further test of the kill switch, kill off then turn on ignition, no yellow engine light and no pump pressurising. Flick kill to on and yellow light appears and pump runs.
Now the bike is in neutral and the stand down, when I turned the ignition on the word side appeared before the mileage came up. It hasn't happened again though. I think it's the side stand switch.
So can it be bypassed ? A) to prove it and B) if it is the fault I need to use it until the new one arrives
How many wires does the S.S. Switch have? Can you put up a Wiring Diagram?

3 wires

1 goes to Vehicle speed sensor, twistgrip, throttle control actuator and pin 50 on ECM

2 goes to pin 56 on ECM

3 goes to ground

4H will have either an Earth or 12V. depending what is on 3G. 3H will have 12V. on it so that when the Relay operates 12V. will be passed to the Starter (Solenoid) on the Green wire.
You can feel the Relay click when the Start Button is pressed which will give you an idea but easy to swap it with another Relay.
Most Relays are the same.

To test a relay it needs to be on the bench. Energise the coil and then with an ohmmeter measure resistance of closed contacts.

On the 2008 Sportster here the system relay gives up fairly regularly. It energises but the contacts burn and don't make a reliable contact.

The other one is called a system relay, if it doesn't work will it throw more problems in the mix ?

Ideally you should buy a New Relay but swapping them over won’t cause a problem provided the Pins are in the same place on each. See attached Pic.
The one on the Right is a standard Make Relay, the one on the Left is a Changeover Relay. Compare yours with the pic. From your Diagram you have a Standard Make Relay.

Mine has a 4 pin micro relay.

I've got one ordered from Hogparts so I'll hopefully be back on the road during the week

Fault finding by substitution, if you swap them and it doesn't go through the initiation process, you have your culprit, if it does it may well not be a relay!
Have you also not got a third relay the same, the Brake relay this would be the one to swap with first with the starter to see if it is that relay?

Swapped the brake relay for the start one and presto she boomed into life.

Got a relay on order from our friends at Hogparts so its now a waiting game.

Don't want to ride it without the brake relay for fear it will guarantee needing the ABS because it may not work.

Hi

No it wasn't.

Still waiting on the relay to arrive

The sun's out too

One thing you have to watch out for with relays is that there are two pin patterns, Type A and, strangely enough :), Type B.

This illustration is of the 5-pin changeover relay, but the same applies to the 4-pin on/off relay.

Type A isn't common, but I did once fall foul of this.

That is a specialised Micro Relay. Not at all like a normal 12V relay and quite rare. I hope Hogparts comes up with the goods for you. Typical H-D to use a rare hard to find type. scratch_head

A quick look on the Web and I found this on Amazon just in case Hogpatrs cant get it.
Bloody expensive though! o_O
